Science of Compassion; Art of Healing

Applied Mindfulness Retreat For Thai Healthcare Professionals

Dates: July 7-9, 2017 (Friday-Sunday)

Location:  Wangree Resort (Nakhon Nayok)

SPACE IS LIMITED

Healthcare professionals are motivated by deep compassion and caring.  We do our best to offer healing treatments and techniques.  We have been trained as scientists so that we can observe, assess, diagnose and treat.  We have been trained to prevent our emotions from “interfering” with our professional work.

Yet there is also a connection between compassion and healing.  Our mindful compassion has the capacity to heal us and to help us in healing others.  New neuroscientific research has started to reveal the deep relationship between mindfulness, compassion and human connection.  Research shows that healing impact of human connection is grounded in mindful presence and compassion.

On this retreat, participants will learn about this research.  More importantly, we will practice nourishing our mindfulness and compassion together as a sangha.  We will practice stopping and generating the energy of compassion in the present moment using the application of mindfulness in every day life.

We have the special opportunity to learn from Dr. Larry and Dr. Peggy, Lay Dharma Teachers who have decades of expertise on leading professionals around the world in cultivating mindfulness, understanding, compassion.

This retreat on applied mindfulness skills has two purposes:

1)      To introduce Thai healthcare professionals to the practices and skills of cultivating and applying mindfulness in daily life at home and at work.

2)      To practice using applied mindfulness to generate compassion and kindness for ourselves and others in our clinical work

This retreat is especially for Thai healthcare professionals, including doctors, dentists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and other allied health and medical professionals.

The retreat will be conducted in Thai (except Dharma talks in English with translation) according to the traditions and practices of Plum Village and Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh.

Teachers:  The teachers on this retreat are Dr. Larry Ward and Dr. Peggy Ward.

  • Dr. Larry is an expert on the neuroscience of mindfulness who has researched the neuroplastic correlates of Bhavana.  Dr. Larry is also a corporate mindfulness consultant who frequently advices leaders on implementing mindfulness in organizations and is a mindful leadership instructor in the Search Inside Yourself program.
  • Dr. Peggy has an extensive background in education including developing mindfulness programs for schools and communities.   Dr. Peggy has also worked in hospitals and outpatient clinics where she developed curriculum and offered mindfulness trainings for both patients and staff.
  • Together, Peggy and Larry coauthored Love’s Garden:  A Guide to Mindful Relationships.  For more than 25 years, Dr. Larry and Dr. Peggy have provided spiritual direction and taught people around the world how to cultivate and apply mindfulness in their daily life and work.  They have taught professionals and workers to benefit from mindfulness in many different settings, including schools, hospitals, foundations, corporations, government offices and prisons.

The retreat facilitators also include Thai healthcare professionals who are also experienced mindfulness practitioners in the Plum Village tradition.
